6/10-Global GGG Show> More Hogan Stories from Two Who Really Knew

6/10-Global GGG Show> More Hogan Stories from Two Who Really Knew

No one won more US Opens than Ben Hogan. The Hawk as he was known, won four, which ties him with Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones and Willie Anderson. He was also known to be very callous and private.

We’ve now learned he was quite compassionate and had a keen sense of humor from author Tim Scott, who joined us a few weeks ago. We didn’t get a chance to hear all the wonderful stories from him, so we’ve invited him back to the Golf, Grape & Grub Show.

We are also joined by Marty Leonard, the daughter of the man who first sponsored Hogan and developed Colonial CC and Shady Oaks CC in Fort Worth.

Pam Wood & myself tee it up from our 19th hole at 11 AM (CT) on FB Live.

Tim, as you may remember wrote the book “Ben Hogan-The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew.” He worked directly for Mr. Hogan @ Shady Oaks CC and wanted to reveal the real person he was, which most consider to be a steely faced golf icon. He worked for 14 years with Mr. Hogan.

From the 1920’s to the 1970’s Leonard’s Department Store was widely know for it’s size and selection. As big as a suburban mall, it had it’s own subway and Santa’s rocket express. Many of you know my background in retailing so get a load of this: the store carried everything from pianos to petticoats & pumpkin seeds; fur coats & windmills; they made there own pasta, candy, coffee & had it’s own dairy products & baked bread. It included a beauty salon, groceries, auto service (with Leonard’s oil of course) and also some Leonard’s cigars.  It even had it’s own script.

Marvin Leonard developed it with his brother and his daughter caught the genes for golf and the outdoors.

Marty’s accomplishments are many in golf, nature and charity. She built and owns Leonard Golf Links, the Nike Research Center and has served on the boards of both Colonial & Shady Oaks. She’s in the Texas Golf HOF, won the North Texas PGA Byron Nelson Award and served as the Chair of the USGA’s Women’s Advisory Committee. She literally is one of the Great Women of Texas.

6/3-Global GGG Show> Pioneer Broadcaster Ann Liguori + Hogan Winner Maverick McNealy

6/3-Global GGG Show> Pioneer Broadcaster Ann Liguori + Hogan Winner Maverick McNealy

The Golf, Grape & Grub Show is all about pursuing and enjoying your passions. Our two guests this week embody that.

Certainly, Ann Liguori has followed hers for a long time. She is the first female to host a call in talk show on the first all sports radio station WFAN in New York. She continues in her 24th year covering Majors for both golf and tennis on both WFAN and the CBS Radio Network.

We also welcome back recent Ben Hogan Award winner Maverick McNealy of Stanford who shares the passion as well. He has maintained that he may not go pro and stay an amateur.  He just loves the gemme. Maverick has been consistently ranked as the #1 or 2 amateur in the country. He was a three time nominee for the annual collegiate golfer of the year award and won the coveted Hogan award as he completed his senior year.

This past year McNealy won the Nike Collegiate at Colonial, which was his 11th victory at Stanford tying him with Tiger Woods and Patrick Rodgers. This season he averaged 69.7 in 29 competitive starts. He will be playing in the Arnold Palmer Cup June 9-12 @ Atlanta Athletic Club in an amateur Ryder Cup competition between the USA and Europe.

Pam Wood & myself tee it up with Ann & Maverick from our 19th hole this Saturday at 11 AM(CT) on FB Live.

We will chat with Ann about her book “A Passion for Golf, Celebrity Musings About the Game”. The book has some zesty info on Hollywood, music and sports.

Some names you might recognize who she’s interviewed include Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Wilt Chamberlin, Jim Brown, Billie Jean King, Gordie Howe, Brett Favre. Kevin Costner, Sylvester Stallone, Celine Dion & Vince Gill to name a handful.

Ann was also an original host on the Golf Channel producing and hosting her own weekly show in prime time. She’s also covered 6 Olympic games.

We’ll also chat with her about her philanthropy work. This year she will again conduct her golf tournament that has raised over $1.5 million over the past 19 years. Her foundation focuses on cancer prevention, research and awareness.

The Hogan Book You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

This week and next, we celebrate the two golf legends from the DFW area, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. I recently discovered the author of a Hogan book who just happens to live in my neighborhood.  Talk about small world.

Tim Scott walks around the corner to join Pam Wood & I this Saturday at 11 AM(CT) on FB Live. Tim wrote the book “Ben Hogan-The Myths Everyone Knows, The Man No One Knew.”

He worked directly for Mr. Hogan @ Shady Oaks CC and wanted to reveal the real person he was, which most consider to be a steely faced golf icon. Tim worked for 14 years with Mr. Hogan beginning in 1969.  Sports media at the time and even today consistently paints a picture of a meticulous golfer & dresser, but a brusque, unapproachable solitary man.
While working with the 9 time major champion, Tim discovered a very compassionate and selfless man. And to cap it off, there’s a great dog story amongst many others in our 19th hole.
Of course we’ll update you on the talented fields in the LPGA Kingsmill event and the ATT Byron Nelson. Next week we’ll broadcast from the famed Colonial CC @ the Dean & Deluca Invitational and Pam turns total plaid.
